Café Científico is organised by the Cultural Center of the National Autonomous University in Mexico (UNAM) in Morelia. It is currently celebrating its seventh year of activities aimed at generating public conversations about creativity, scientific research and the commitment of science, universities and society to each other.
Café Científico is promoted by the National School of Higher Studies Unit Morelia to bring together academics, scientists, students and artists involved in the generation of knowledge in an informal and spontaneous environment in which science is recognised as a fundamental part of the culture.

Mathematical biology: from description to prediction of natural phenomena

Two of the most important academic societies in mathematics in the world, the European Mathematical Society and the European Society of Mathematics and Theoretical Biology, suggested designating 2018 as the International Year of Mathematical Biology, to draw attention to the increase in and importance of diverse applications of mathematics to biology and life sciences.
For Galielo Galilei “the book of nature was written in mathematical terms and could only be deciphered by those who know mathematics”, and mathematics has become an essential language for many disciplines of scientific knowledge.
Elisa Domínguez is from the Center for Mathematical Sciences, UNAM campus Morelia, and Roberto Romero Arias is from the Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Michoacán University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo.

In February, we heard of the amazing discovery of an ancient city located in the Patzcuaro Lake area. This news generated many questions and the work brought together scientists from various disciplines in archaeology in Michoacán.
For this reason, this month’s Café Cientifico is dedicated to conversation on this and other archaeological discoveries with José Luis Punzo, a researcher in the Archeology section of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Michoacán and professor in the Geohistory degree program and in the Master in Anthropology of the UNAM campus Morelia.

The budget allocated to the development of Science and Technology in different Latin American countries is decreasing. Just a few days ago, it was announced that Mexico will have a cut of 23% in the 2017 budget for science.
The scientific community is very concerned about the consequences that this cut will have for the present and future of scientific research in our country.

En 1951, Alan Turing propuso el test denominado “El juego de la imitación” para determinar si una máquina es capaz de “pensar” como un humano. Durante décadas, el test se ha usado como una métrica en Inteligencia Artificial, pero el triunfo de Eugene — un chatbot que superó la prueba en 2014 — nos lleva a cuestionar la validez del test. ¿Cómo puede medirse la “inteligencia” de una máquina?

Charlaremos sobre los modelos femeninos que ha habido en la comunidad académica en México y en el mundo, en cómo las mujeres pueden llegar a decidir por estudiar una carrera universitaria enfocada a la investigación científica y sobre las políticas de género que comienzan a existir en distintas entidades de educación y de investigación públicas en México.
